The half Spreuers
The original name for the petal and leaf shapes is called a Spreuer (rhymes with ‘lawyer’) so we’ll begin by making some simple half Spreuers.
1 Use 2mm wide yellow quilling strips – half-lengths 22cm (9in.) will be easier to use. Make a tiny loop in the end of the strip and glue it firmly into place.
2 Hold the onion holder sideways and using Diagram A as a guide, slip the loop over the first prong and take the strip up behind it. Now take the strip over prong 7 to the front of the onion holder. Bring it back down to the bottom prong again and glue it neatly in place.
3 Now take the paper strip up behind the onion holder again but, this time, go over prong 6. Again, come down to the base and glue.
4 Continue in this way, going over a lower prong each time. When you have made five loops (finally going onto prong 3), take the strip down to the base, tear or cut off the strip and glue the end down. When the glue is dry, you can slip off this half Spreuer from the onion holder.
5 Each of the six flowers on the design needs two half Spreuers so make 11 more of these, following Steps 1-5.
The blue Spreuers
1 These Spreuers are slightly different. Use 2mm wide two-tone quilling strips and make a tiny loop, gluing the two light sides of the two-tone strip together. Go up the back of the onion holder with the light coloured side of the strip facing you.
2 Your first three loops are made just like a simple Spreuer, using prongs 8 and 7. Bring the strip down to the base and glue.
3 Now take the strip up behind the onion holder but then back to the front through the third gap. Take the strip up and over prong 6, down the back and through the second gap to the front. Now go up the front and over prong 5 to the back. Bring the strip down and through the second gap, again to the front. Bring the strip down to the base and glue.
4 You have now completed the right side of the flower, so take the strip over to the left and then repeat Step 3.
The stalks and the leaves
These are made in the same way as each other. This time, the half Spreuers are made on prongs 10, 8, 6, 4 and 2, so they are longer and narrower than those made previously. Again you will need 12 in all.
Making the back of the frame
1 Refer to Diagram B. Cut a piece of cardboard 23cm x 5cm (9in. x 6in.) and using a glue stick, attach to a piece of blue paper measuring 28cm x 20cm (11in. x 8in.). Cut off the corners of the blue paper missing the cardboard by 2mm (1⁄16in.).
2 Refer here to Diagram C. Fold down the flaps of paper and fix firmly into place with PVA glue.
Making the front of the frame
1 Refer to Diagram D (right). Cut another piece of cardboard slightly larger than
the first piece and cut out its centre to create a frame 2cm (3⁄4in.) wide.
2 Refer to Diagram E. Place this frame onto a blue piece of paper measuring 28cm x 20cm (11in. x 8in.) as before. Attach carefully using the glue stick. Pierce the centre of the paper with scissors and cut towards each corner.
3 Refer to Diagram F. Fold back the four flaps over the frame. Cut off the flaps leaving a short edge over the frame. Glue these to the frame using PVA glue.
4 Refer to Diagram G. Again, cut off the corners of the blue paper missing the cardboard by 2mm (1⁄16in.).
5 Refer to Diagram H. Carefully fold down the paper flaps and fix them firmly into place using the PVA glue.
Decorating the frame
1 The yellow Spreuers on the frame are made in exactly the same way as the half Spreuers. Follow Steps 1-5 and then go over prong 6 again but, this time, to the left of your first loop. This means you will have to slot it carefully through the gap between the prongs 6 and 7. Now, take the paper strip down to the base and glue firmly into position.
2 Continue in this way – a loop on the right, a loop on the left – until you have made four loops on either side of your first loop. Tear off the strip and glue down firmly. You will need eight of these in all.
To make up your plaque
1 Print off this page and Trace Diagram I, the ‘Kiss the Cook’ text onto the centre of the sheet of lemon paper. Glue it carefully between the back and front of your completed frame using the PVA glue.
2 Position your Spreuer flowers in a pleasing arrangement around the lettering on your picture frame. When you are completely happy with the arrangement, pick up each of your Spreuer flowers and carefully glue them into place.PC
